Check the simple airflow items first
A loaded filter or blocked return can reduce airflow through the furnace. If the heat exchanger temperature rises too far, a limit control may shut the burners down until the equipment cools.
- Replace a visibly loaded filter with the correct size and type
- Open supply registers and keep returns unobstructed
- Confirm the thermostat is mounted securely and set to Heat
- Do not remove panels or bypass the furnace door switch
What a technician may need to test
A proper diagnosis may include temperature rise, static pressure, blower operation, limit controls, flame sensing, ignition, venting, thermostat signals, and the condition of electrical components. Replacing a limit switch without finding why it opened can leave the real problem in place.
Equipment sizing and duct design can also contribute. An oversized furnace may heat the space quickly but cycle too often, while inadequate ductwork can create high temperature and pressure inside the system.
Safety signs that should not wait
Turn the furnace off and seek help for a gas odor, soot, rollout, smoke, repeated breaker trips, an activated carbon-monoxide alarm, or visible damage around the venting system. Leave the home and contact the gas utility or emergency services when a gas leak or carbon-monoxide emergency is suspected.
